Marketing Compliance Officer
Role Overview
The Marketing Compliance Officer is responsible for supporting the Marketing function and wider business with day-to-day compliance enquiries, guidance, and monitoring across all marketing and player-facing communications activity. The role ensures that all marketing material, campaigns, promotions, and communications channels are designed, reviewed, and operated in line with Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) requirements, applicable local country requirements, and internal policy.
The role acts as the first point of contact for the Marketing team on compliance matters, providing practical sign-off, guidance, and assurance, while escalating material risks and reporting on compliance performance to the Head of Compliance. The successful candidate will combine sound regulatory knowledge with the commercial awareness needed to work constructively with marketing stakeholders without compromising compliance standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Affiliate & CRM Marketing Compliance
• Review and monitor affiliate marketing activity, affiliate websites, and affiliate-generated content for compliance with MGA advertising standards and applicable local requirements.
• Support the Affiliate team with enquiries on permissible marketing practices, disclosure requirements, and affiliate agreement compliance clauses.
• Review CRM campaigns (email, SMS, push, in-app messaging) prior to deployment, ensuring targeting, frequency, content, and consent practices meet regulatory and internal standards.
• Monitor ongoing affiliate and CRM activity on a sample and risk basis, identifying and escalating non-compliant practices.
2. Brand Compliance
• Act as a compliance gatekeeper for brand-level marketing initiatives, ensuring brand guidelines, messaging, and positioning remain within regulatory boundaries.
• Review brand campaigns, sponsorships, and partnerships for compliance risk prior to launch.
• Review and support campaigns around social media, influences, streamers and ambassadors for compliance risk
• Support the business in maintaining a consistent, compliant brand voice across all markets and channels.
3. Website, Email, SMS & Other Communications Channels
• Review and sign off website content, landing pages, email content, SMS content, push notifications, and other communications channels prior to publication.
• Ensure all consumer-facing content includes required regulatory disclosures, responsible gambling messaging, and accurate representations of products, odds, and promotional terms.
• Monitor live channels on an ongoing basis to identify content that has fallen out of compliance due to regulatory change or operational drift.
4. Promotions Compliance
• Review all promotional mechanics, bonus terms, free bet/free spin offers, and promotional creative prior to launch for compliance with MGA requirements and local country rules.
• Assess promotions for fairness, clarity, and the absence of misleading or aggressive marketing practices.
• Maintain a promotions sign-off log and tracker to evidence review and approval for audit and regulatory purposes.
• Draft, review, and maintain promotional and general marketing terms and conditions, ensuring clarity, fairness, and regulatory compliance in line with the legal department.
• Liaise with Legal and Marketing to ensure T&Cs are updated in line with regulatory change, campaign mechanics, and jurisdictional requirements.
• Monitor live T&Cs across channels to confirm consistency with the approved version and flag discrepancies.
6. Design & Content Review
• Review marketing design assets (digital, print, social, video) for compliance with advertising standards, including target audience suitability and responsible gambling messaging.
• Provide practical design guidance to the Marketing and Creative teams to embed compliance requirements at the concept stage, reducing late-stage rework.
• Maintain a record of approved/rejected creative assets to support consistency and audit trail.
7. Systems Review & Compliant Framework Design
• Review marketing systems, tools, and platforms (CRM platforms, content management systems, campaign management tools) to assess compliance capability, gaps, and risk.
• Design and implement compliant frameworks, checklists, and workflows for marketing sign-off, monitoring, and escalation.
• Work with Marketing and IT/Product stakeholders to embed compliance controls into systems and processes (e.g. consent management, suppression lists, geo-targeting controls).
8. Responsible Gambling & GDPR in Marketing
• Ensure all marketing and promotional material reflects responsible and safer gambling principles, including appropriate tone, audience targeting, and required RG messaging.
• Review marketing activity for compliance with restrictions on vulnerable persons, self-excluded players, and age-verification messaging.
• Monitor regulatory and industry developments on responsible marketing standards and advise Marketing on emerging expectations.
• Ensure GDPR frameworks are managed accordingly and ensure compliance with all applicable requirements in conjunction with the DPO
9. MGA & Local Country Requirements
• Maintain up-to-date working knowledge of MGA advertising and marketing requirements, and monitor for regulatory updates, guidance notes, and enforcement trends.
• Support the assessment of marketing compliance requirements applicable to local country markets in which operator clients are active, escalating jurisdiction-specific risks as needed.
• Act as a key point of contact for marketing-related queries arising from MGA correspondence, audits, or compliance reviews.
10. Sign-off, Guidance, Monitoring, Reporting & Assurance
• Provide timely sign-off and practical compliance guidance to the Marketing team across all of the above areas.
• Conduct ongoing monitoring of live marketing activity, content, and channels, using a risk-based and sample-testing approach.
• Prepare regular compliance reporting (e.g. monthly/quarterly) for the Head of Compliance summarising sign-off volumes, issues identified, remediation actions, and emerging risks.
• Provide assurance to senior management and, where required, the Board, on the effectiveness of marketing compliance controls.
• Maintain accurate records of all reviews, approvals, and escalations to support internal audit and regulatory inspection.
Qualifications & Experience
• Minimum 3-5 years' experience in a compliance, regulatory, or risk role within the online gambling/gaming industry, ideally with direct exposure to marketing compliance in an MGA-licensed B2C operator environment.
• Strong working knowledge of MGA advertising and marketing requirements; familiarity with other gambling regulatory advertising regimes is an advantage.
• Degree in Law, Compliance, Marketing, Business, or a related field is preferred but not essential where equivalent industry experience is demonstrated.
• Experience reviewing marketing creative, promotional mechanics, and digital content from a regulatory perspective.
• Familiarity with CRM platforms, content management systems, and marketing/compliance workflow tools is advantageous.
